Fire Performers PLEASE READ - Wed. Town Hall Meeting

Hello!
please repost this to any fire performers you know, There are some important
issues facing the fire community, and we need to get the word out quick, and
there is an important Town Hall meeting wednesday.

In addition, there is a new discussion list for fire performers to discuss tips,
community interests, events, and more at:

http://www.curiousjosh.com/lafire

please sign up, more information about the list is below.

----
*Subject*: Town Hall Meeting: A Call to Arms for all Los Angeles Based Fire
Artists

*Where*: Smash Labs, 1714 Albion St, Los Angeles, CA 90031 323-227-6274

*When*: Doors open at 7pm Meeting begins at 8pm

*Who*: All members of the Los Angeles Based Fire Arts Community

*Why*: During recent interactions with Los Angeles County and State _Fire
Marshalls <http://www.film.ca.gov/LocationResources/FilmSafety.html>_we have
learned that they are in the process of designing a set of safety standards
and guidelines in an effort to standardize safety requirements within our
industry. These safety guidelines are to be implemented in the first
quarter of 2008.

We have the great fortune that our local county Fire Marshalls have
offered to allow us participate in the design of these standards.
Organizations such as the Safety Advisory for Fire and FX in Entertainment
(SAFFE)and members of the Pyrotechnics community have offered to provide
guidance or advice in the different methods of organizing ourselves and
interfacing with regulatory and enforcement entities such as the Fire
Department.

This *_Wednesday, December 12, 2007_* a Town Hall Meeting has been called to
inform the community and discuss the formation an organization comprised of
members representing the interests of the Los Angeles fire community.

******It is time for us all to come together, as a community - to openly
create our own guidelines that address issues, such as safety, performance
standards, etc. It is of the utmost importance that we collectively decide
this before it is decided for us*****

In Addition, there is a new e-mail discussion list for
fire artists and people who are interested in fire performance in the Los
Angeles area. This list can be joined by following this link:

http://www.curiousjosh.com/lafire

This list is an opportunity for us to stay in touch as a community, and
discuss a number of pressing issues that are affecting the Los Angeles fire
community such as the upcoming implementation of safety regulations,
standards, and restrictions governing our industry.

The LA Fire mailing list will be a great place to:
discuss issues affecting the fire community
share fire related tips and techniques
communicate about fire events in the LA area
and more

Please spread the word by continuing to forward this to fire performers who
are in Los Angeles, or who visit Los Angeles and perform with fire. If we
fail in this initiative then viewpoints such as "Poi is the most dangerous
tool in your arsenal" or the potential banning of poi spinning in the
direction of the audience may become a reality.

Troupes & Tool Manufacturers that have involvement in this initiative have
included: CuriousJosh, Fire Drums, Fire Groove, Los Angeles Fire Effects (LAFX),
Machina
Candeo, Mutaytor, Phoenix Projekt, Pyrophernalia / Om Fire, Sirena
Serpentina, Trick Concepts, & Volcano Flux.

*_Directions:
_*
SmashLabs
1714 Albion Street (entrance is here - big red door with cut metal numbers -
push down on the lever to enter)
The "back" door is a big roll door in the last parking lot on the North side
of Main just before the train tracks - look for the La Mano Press sign. If
it's full, there is an empty lot directly across the street on the South
side of Main Street, or feel free to park on Main or Albion and come in the
front. *main thing to remember is if you've gone over the tracks, you've
passed Albion which is a TINY street and easy to miss.

*GoogleMaps:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1714+Albion+St,+Los+Angeles,+CA+90031,+USA&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1

*
1714 Albion St,
Los Angeles, CA 90031 - it's the triangular space that starts on Main and
back up on Albion
323-22S-MASH (323-227-6274) is the office phone which I'll have on me in
case anyone gets lost.

*
"There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less
than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction."
-John F. Kennedy (1917 - 1963)*

Not like I need to tell this troupe about FireDrums, but you all have friends around the community that may not have gotten 'tha werd'. So please forward this on to your friends cause this is gonna be the most awesome gathering yet. This will be our fifth FireDrums gathering and we've planned more workshops for fire and flow arts, drumming, yoga and even a Reiki circle. The Santa Cruz redwoods are both incredibly energizing and yet at the same time magically peaceful and serene. This being our fourth year and the fifth gathering, we have grown a wonderful collective of volunteers to help organize and make this opportunity the best possible learning and sharing experience. Please check out the web site and tribe @ ~ http://firedrums.org ~ http://firedrums.tribe.net

I finished editing the photos and posted them in the "Fire Drums Fall 2006" folder on http://naturalturn.fotki.com/bm/

Clicking on a thumbnail of a photo brings up a medium-resolution image. Click on "Get Original Uploaded Photo" below that to get the high-resolution image.

For convenience I enabled ordering of photos on this site. There was some question about this at FireDrums, so I'd like to emphasize that I make no money from this -- you're dealing directly with Fotki (which is a photo-sharing provider like Flickr) and the prices are set at cost. You can also always download the high-resolution image and print it yourself if you want.

Many thanks to Zan for posing for many beautiful photos! I hadn't previously seen some of the things he managed to do.

Ecstacy in Exile
By Nicholas Powers
From the September 21, 2006 issue | Posted in Culture
BLACK ROCK CITY, Nevada—“Welcome home!” He shouts. We hug and I look at Burning Man, a city rising in the vast Nevada desert. I came here to pour out the last water from New Orleans. A year of rage and sadness sloshed inside me and I hoped the desert would soak the last of it away. But was it possible to “come home?” I had seen a city be flooded and a people made homeless. How could I let go of pain where no one wanted to be reminded of it? I went to Center Camp, a gigantic tent where the sun beamed on New Agers entwining limbs in slow dance. A woman leaned to me. “Why can’t this be the real world,” she paused. “Is the real world even real?”

Attendees often describe the event as truth and the outside as illusion. It is easy to feel this in an empty desert used as a stage to act out fantasy. Of course, fantasy is the refusal of separation. Hidden desires are acted out in hopes of revealing the true self. It is allowed even demanded. “Don’t be a spectator” is shouted by anyone who sees you watching rather than doing.

Burners speak of the event with religious intensity. The feeling of truth comes from this rare unity but it is a unity created by escaping differences not overcoming them. The real world separation from ethnic poor is finalized in the isolation of the desert. It is relevant because Burning Man borrows from cultures of color, to the point of being a form of minstrelsy.

Near my camp was a Hare Krishna site where whites with Hindu face-paint swayed and chanted. “We’re all one cosmic consciousness,” I was told. They smiled sweetly and fed me. Their sincere kindness eroded my guard.

I felt a genuine openness. Our conversation turned to New Orleans. I tried to say how it divided our nation but heard “we’re all the same cosmic consciousness.”

It sounded less a profound truth than an escape from pain through denial. Like the many attendees with dread-locks and saris, they wore a mask of color. They enjoyed the freedom of otherness without the burden of history and the exposure to power that real people of color endure.

The next day a friend gave me two pills of ecstasy. “If you don’t find what you’re looking for,” he said, “these will help you forget you tried.” I pocketed them, walked around and found an art installation with rows of crosses for soldiers killed in Iraq. A veteran kneeled and wept.

Once, the Christian cross was a symbol of sacrifice to me. Now it seemed an empty icon. I needed communion and found a Common Ground activist. We had met in New Orleans. “I was here when we heard about Katrina,” she said.

“People said in that hippie way, it was meant to be.” Her eyes flashed, “I was like what the fuck is wrong with you.” We shook our heads. I gave her a pill, if we could not believe in joy we could induce it. On the climactic sixth night of the festival, when burners set fire to a giant wooden effigy, I took half a pill. After the Man blazed and crashed I circled the inferno. My friend from New Orleans sat and stared into the fire. I hoped it burned away her memory of the flood.

I walked to Nexus, one of the large clubs. The mild glow of ecstasy forced me to feel my body. It left me knowing I have this small gasp of time on earth and the only meaning it can have comes from how I share it with others.

Nearby a young woman stood stiffly. I remembered the crosses and said, “Here,” and put the last pill in her palm. She smiled, “You totally read me.”
I leaned in, “Remember the story of Jesus feeding the masses.” She nodded. “Maybe it wasn’t a physical miracle. Maybe he had them split bread until each had a useless bit and realized they sacrificed hunger for togetherness. No one was left out.

Maybe that was the real miracle.” She hugged her thanks. The ecstasy had worn off but a stronger joy reached through me. I gave away the pills that could numb my exile. It left in my mind a selfimage I could believe in and while dancing, I held myself like home.

Wednesday night fire jam at the Hookahdome!

It's that time again! Bring your fire toys and non flammable-clothing for the 3rd annual, much-more-organized-than-last-year-with-RAD-DJ's-lined-up HOOKAHDOME FIRE JAMBOREE! We have some GREAT DJ's lined up for your uninterrupted dancing/watching/spinning pleasure, so come play in the hookahdome's front yard! The jam starts around 9pm (a little after sundown) and goes until you either use up your fuel or your arms fall off. We hope the latter doesn't happen.
Hookahdome is located in the 3 o'clock plaza and Esplanade-ish. Big dome. Fire torches in the front yard. Can't miss it.

Fire stuff in the Santa Cruz/San Francisco area April 14-16?

I'll be headed in to the Santa Cruz and San Fran area to visit a friend and go to Firedrums, april 14-16 (maybe as early as the 13th). Are there any weekly/monthly gatherings happening that weekend? I'll be in and out of red white and blue beach to visit my brother in Santa Cruz and my friend in San Fran... hoping to catch a spinjam or two in the area. Any suggestions?

Crimson's email to the Fire Conclave list (10/05)

The Fire Conclave is a large collection of Fire performance troupes that perform around the Man just prior to ignition on Burn night each year. The Fire Conclave is comprised of many troupes from all over the US and Canada.

This is a copy of Burning Man's Fire Conclave announcement email from Crimson Rose. Crimson is one of the partners in the Burning Man LLC, Shin (head) of the SF Fire Conclave and in charge of all of the Shins from all of the other troupes involved in the entire Fire Conclave.

Starting in January of each year, the SF Fire Conclave starts their monthly gatherings on the last Sunday of each month before Burning Man. This is a Fire Spin Jam open to ALL taking place in the parking lot of Burning Man LLC's headquarters on 3rd St. @ 16th St. in SF adjacent to Snow Drift from 7-10pm.

Some of the people who show up are members of the SF Fire Conclave, the majority belong to other troupes that also perform in Conclave and there are others who have not joined any troupe either because they have not committed to who they will spin with at Burning Man or they just don't care to.
Subject: [fire-conclave-announce] Fire Conclave Communication October 2005

It was the best of times it was the most amazing of times and nothing
like a good old percussion bomb to start your orgasum off right for a
new year. Thanks to all those that participated this year at Burning
Man, whether you were standing within the Great Circle or dancing
through out Black Rock City. What a year it was, great weather, great
art, great fire and more great fire.

• THANK YOU FOR 2005
• 2006 FIRE CONCLAVE MEMBERSHIP
• DRUMMING / MUSIC
• SF LAST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH FIRE JAM 2006
• WORLD FESTIVAL PREMIER OF "Burning Man: Beyond Black Rock" in LA 11/4
• BLACK ROCK ARTS FOUNDATION
• FIRE CONCLAVE ANNOUNCE LIST

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
••••••••••••••••••••••••••

To the Membership of the Fire Conclave that danced within the Great
Circle Thank You for responding to the challenge of this years burn.
Every group outdid themselves even if their time of dancing was
short. Every year the fire dancing becomes more amazing, performers
perfect their skills and I see the level of excellence with fire
dance rise higher and higher. So also should the standards for
membership within the Fire Conclave rise higher and higher.

I pushed the numbers of people inside the Great Circle. Between
performers, fire watch, helmsmen, drummers we totaled 870 plus within
32 different groups. That is a lot of energy not even counting the
other people that occupy the space (fire men, rangers, pyro team,
neon team, Man builders, platform builders and press). I knew that we
would be pushing the limits with so many people, but I took a leap of
faith that it would work. For the most part it was amazing. I have
heard from many people inside the circle and outside that it was the
best burn ever. And I believe that the process that was created by
Tabasco for the ambient drummers that are not connected to any group
worked out really well. That will continue for next year as well.

Certainly there was not enough room, possible cues were not heard and
did not get passed on and time will always be an issue. Each group
does their best they can with the gift that is given to them, Dancing
at the foot of the Man.

I say a gift because this opportunity, invitation, is open to a small
number of groups that understand the limitation of this gift.
Space, Time, Flexibility.

• SPACE - Will always be at a premium because there is only so much
room within the Great Circle, and the space is not going to enlarge.
It means that only so many groups will be allowed to dance. In 2005
there were 32 group. Just too many, the number will be brought back
down to a manageable number.

• TIME - The whole of the Fire Conclave is given 30 minutes, because
basically that is about the limit of the patience of the participants
watching. And when I start hearing the crowd shout "Burn the fucker"
I know that the time is short and I will move things along.

• FLEXIBILITY - Anything and everything has a habit of happening
within the Great Circle. Things may not go as planned - time is cut
short, things run over. And because there is so much going on every
one MUST be flexible.

For any group to do a full show with unlimited time, unlimited
restrains and a more intimate audience then I suggest take advantage
of other areas through out the week to dance, any where besides the
Great Circle on Saturday night.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
••••••••••••••••••••••••••
2006 FIRE CONCLAVE MEMBERSHIP - INVITATION

Headed in the direction of more choreographed dances, I found that
everyone met the challenge. And this year marked a change in how
things will work in the future. The standards for membership within
Fire Conclave will continue to be high. That does not necessary mean
more complex dances from those that are chosen. But more than just
jamming. Each group is invited to create their own dance.

STRUCTURE - The process for selection for membership and dancing
within the Great Circle will be similar to last year.
2006 DEADLINES are as followings. PLEASE RESPECT THE DATES
PHASE ONE - TELL ME FEBRUARY 1
PHASE TWO - SHOW ME JULY 1

PHASE ONE - TELL ME FEBRUARY 1 DEADLINE
Groups will need to communicate to me that they are interested AND
what they have planned. Tell me what your group is capable of
creating. This may be very hard for people at this point, you may not
know until deep into the Summer who will be in your group. But I need
to know way before that time. What you present to me will give me the
ideas of how your energy will be placed around the Great Circle.
Because I have heard from many new groups I am willing to
entertainment membership in the Fire Conclave to new groups. But
every group that wants a position inside the Great Circle Old or New
will have to Show Me.

PHASE TWO - SHOW ME JULY 1ST DEADLINE
I need to view preliminary plans of what each group is creating well
before we arrive on the playa. Once the videos are in, I will make my
decision of which groups will be dancing within the Great Circle and
communicate directly with them.

MEDIA FORMAT
• WEB SITE - send an address where your dance is located
• CD OR DVD - I can read the following programs:
• Real One player
• Windows media player
• Quick Time movie
• Video tape

FINAL DANCE will be 15 minutes. More information will come.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
••••••••••••••••••••••••••
DRUMMING / MUSIC
Certainly every group is encouraged to work with their own drummers/
musicians. Those drummers that are not connected to a group will be
gathered together into the Ambient Drummers and placed around the
Great Circle. By emailing Tabasco (tabasco@burningman.com) you can
stay connected.

BLACK ROCK ARTS FOUNDATION
The Black Rock Arts Foundation was established in May of 2001 in
response to the need to promote community-based exhibitions of
interactive art and support the artists and organizations that create
it; the impetus was spawned by the lack of accessible, free art to
the public that invites direct action with the piece and inspires
community.

Several members who direct Burning Man (including myself) formed a
new non-profit corporation and filed for tax-exempt status with the
IRS in July 2001. The Black Rock Arts Foundation received its 501(c)3
status in November 2001.

As some of you may or may not be aware of, the Black Rock Arts
Foundation is embarking on a new initiative to install works of
Burning Man art in the city of San Francisco for temporary
exhibition. Our first endeavor was working with the San Francisco
Arts Commission who asked the Foundation for its support in helping
David Best and his crew build a temporary installation, in the spirit
of the Temples they have constructed for several years at the Burning
Man event, at the center of the new Hayes Green.

The 2nd endeavor will be Michael Christian's Flock (Burning Man 2001
--http://www.michaelchristian.com/sculpt/flock.html) is slotted for
installation in the Civic Center Plaza in front of San Francisco City
Hall in mid- November. A wonderful article can be read at this
address (http://www.sfexaminer.com/news/20051028_ne01_artists.txt).
We are looking for a few volunteers who are interested in: helping to
get Flock ready for the install, helping with the loading and
unloading involved in the transportation of Flock from the East Bay
to the City, and potentially a few folks available to help on site
during installation. Most of the work involved is not "skilled"
rather we need folks who are willing to be the hands that help
execute logistics. Much of the work will involve heavy lifting. The
following is a list of the needs we currently have. Please respond to
hale@blackrockarts.org if you are interested in being a part of this
incredible opportunity!

Michael can use some help on the weekends from this point forward
doing some fine tuning and staging to ensure Flock is ready for
installation. The sculpture is currently in Berkeley in his studio
warehouse and so this is where the bulk of the work would be done.
The work sessions are as follows:

1) Oct 29 & 30 from 12 noon - 5pm
2) Nov 5 & 6 12 noon - 5pm
3) Nov 12: 12 noon - 5 pm

Sunday Nov 13th - Loading in the East Bay
The initial loading of the sculpture, which is in 40 odd pieces, will
begin on Sunday Nov 13th
If you would like to help load (most of which will be done by hand
and sheer brute force) please respond with your availability.
Time TBD

Monday Nov 14th - On and Off Loading East Bay & SF
Sunday's load will be off loaded in Civic Center Plaza and very
possibly a second load will need to come over from the East Bay.
If you would like to help load or unload in either location, please
respond accordingly.
Time TBD

And hey! if you're excited, but you're not on the BRAF email announce
list, please let me know, and I will happily subscribe you!

Fire Arts Competition???

I feel compelled to forward this information to all of you.

Below, I pasted a post from Tedward, Shin of the Los Angeles Fire Conclave. This is a post from his new "Fire Arts Competition" tribe.

Below his post, you'll find 2 links to threads on the tribe that discuss the intention of this proposed competition. I've been very active in these threads in an effort to preserve the integrity of our Art Form.

The threads are lengthy, but I encourage you to read them because I feel the global state of the Fire Arts potentially hangs in the balance! A strong statement I'm aware, but I truly do believe it. Thanx for your time... ~Vatra~
______________________________________________________________

>>Tedward wrote:

Who what when where....
Okay, so, people have asked, here's the poop.
My fire troupe did a gig for LobsterfestLA. The promoter who threw it
is now very interested in doing a LARGE fire arts event. At about the
same time that it was brought up in the Fire Tribe, he mentioned the
idea of a fire arts competition. So I thought I'd stir the soup a bit.

so here's the specifics:
Where: Port of LA, San Pedro
When: about early summer, we think
Who: if it's a competition, any fire performer, if it's a gig, we'll
select.
Is this for sure? No, but so few things are.
Is this for real? I gotta say, he sounded pretty definite.

He likes throwing "kids enter free" events, so this would have a lot of
families. This would be entirely above board, so the fire marshals
would be there in force, and will ultimately help shape the final draft
of the event. Also, he has a marketing machine that pulled down a LOT
of people for Lobsterfest, and it still didn't reach most of the city.
With us helping, the reach could be HUGE!

Lots of people means a lot of money available for payouts. A lot of us
could walk away with a month's rent or more on this deal.

This is only the first year, naturally we won't get everything right.<<

Looking for Fire performers

Hi all, not a performer myseld, by Vatra was nice enough to let me in so I can let you all know about an audition coming up:

I am head of a video game/comic design company called Army of Mayhem. This summer we threw an art and music festival called 10 Acre Takeover and it was a hit. What we'd like to do next is make our characters come alive. One of the main characters is a necromancer in a nomadic traveling circus of experiments gone wrong. This is the troop. Once we cast the show, we will make all the costumes and necessary eye candy needed. The show is January 13th at the Key Club in Hollywood. The circus act will be an opener for Dr. Steel (www.doctorsteel.com) (www.myspace.com/drsteel) The Doctor has the club all to himself that night. This band is comlete with the doctor, henchmen musicans, sexy nurses and puppet show. This show is going to be big. Lots and lots of A listers and big name reps who are looking for new acts. The last Dr Steel show was was so packed the venue had to turn people away. This is just for fun.... but everyone involved are serious about their art. Dr Steel alone requires 12 people to run the show. If you’re interested in meeting with other telented artists like yourself and performing ,we would love for you to join us. Army of Mayhem currently does not make profit as we are still in the process of creating our work, however everyone works for free and we love the barter system. For example.. if you need photos done, and a makeupartist to do shots for you, we can get that done. We're all artists trying to help other artists. If you have any comments, concerns, let me know.

Hi Vatra,

Hope your reentry has gone well. What a great event you produced. Amazing. Hope you were as pleased as the rest of us.

Here's a link to a rough edit of the pics I shot at the burn and the rehearsal.

Keep in mind that these can be enhanced in post production and also that your monitor will probably not show all the detail and correct color in the photos.

You can order finished files by emailing the file name to me or we can go over these together if you prefer.

Thanks for the opportunity to shoot this.

Cheers,
Tue & Thu night GG Park Fire Jams

The Tuesday and Thursday night Fire Jams are still going strong in the AIDS Memorial Grove (aka De Laveaga Dell) in the Golden Gate Park. Things kick off around 8:00 to 8:30pm and usually go till about 10:30pm. Tuesday is hosted by Bomtribe and Thursday by Los Suenos Del Fuego.

As many of you know, most of the same people perform with each of these troupes, so you'll see many of the same faces on either night. I usually just go on Tuesday nights because there tends to be a bigger turn out.

Directions:
Enter the Golden Gate Park traveling West in lane 3 of Fell St. @ Stanyon. Once you're in the Park, make the first possible left turn and then the next, first possible left turn. Immediately look for the pathway entrance on the right side of the road under the streetlight. There will probably be some cars parked on each side of the pathway entrance. Walk all the way down the gravel path and look for the bouncing balls of fire!

Map:
http://www.parks.sfgov.org/site/uploadedimages/recpark/large_ggp_map.jpg

I re-posted this because people have asked if these weekly Fire Jams are still happening. The old threads are outdated and buried in the archives of this tribe so here's a freshy ;^)

got burns? then READ ME!

After the Temple Burn at last years Burning Man (2004), I obtained 3rd degree burns on a few of my fingers. After removing the dead and burnt skin, I was left with only a microscopically thin layer (only 1 skin cell thick!) covering 2 of my finger's bones. If you tapped on it, it felt as if you were tapping directly on exposed bone!

This year I returned from Burning Man unscathed, but apparently a few of my friends weren't as lucky. I've received inquires as to how I managed to heal my fingers without any scaring last year. I'm posting this for them, and for anyone else who may find it useful.

There may or may not be better ways to heal from burns. This is merely what I did, and I challenge you to guess which 2 of my 10 fingers have a completely new layer of skin on them. No one has yet to have guessed correctly, because there is absolutely NO visible evidence of scaring whatsoever!

_____________________________________________________________

Vatra's prescription for bad burns WITH broken skin:

Remove the loose broken and burnt layer(s) of skin. Gently rinse away any debris and then apply "New Chapter's" 100% True Tamanu *OIL* (Whole Foods) over the newly exposed skin. Then apply a generous layer of "Silvadene Cream 1%" aka Silver Sulfadiazine (sorry, prescription only) over the Tamanu Oil.

After ensuring both of these ingredients are thoroughly coated over the newly exposed and moist under-layers of the skin, completely cover with a Non-Adherent Dressing (perforated film-coated gauze pad type) and then wrap with Bandages to keep the new skin moist and protected while healing.

"New Chapter's" Tamanu Oil is all-natural and comes from the Tamanu Trees of Vanuatu in the South Pacific. It promotes new skin cell growth at an alarming rate, but the new skin cell formations are extremely delicate and they hover precariously on the surface of the newly exposed and moist under-layers of the skin. Great care must be taken not to disturb this new skin growth. The Silvadene, Non-Adherent Dressing and Bandages help to protect these new skin formations while keeping the wound moist which is essential for proper healing and minimized scaring.

For the best possible results, this process must be repeated every 24 hours or sooner if the Dressing's integrity is compromised in any way. Take great care while removing and replacing the Non-Adherent Dressing as to not disturb the new skin cell formations because they are *extraordinarily* vulnerable at this time. Check for broken and burnt layer(s) of skin that may have loosened since the last Dressing application and remove them. Scarring should only happen if you get lazy and allow the new skin to oxidize and dry out under neglected Dressings which can happen at any moment during the healing process.
_____________________________________________________________

Vatra's prescription for mild burns WITHOUT broken skin:

If your skin is red and/or blistered, but NOT broken, I recommend leaving it alone (DON'T puncture the blisters or remove the dead skin). Apply "New Chapter's" True Tamanu *CREME* (Whole Foods) topically over the effected area.

Depending on the severity of the burn and how diligent you are about keeping it moist with the Tamanu Creme, the burnt skin may eventually begin to dry out and flake off and the blisters may eventually pop and do the same. If that happens, at that point you may choose to follow the "prescription for bad burns WITH broken skin" listed above. However, it will only make a dramatic improvement on your healing process and potential scaring if you begin the regimen when the newly exposed under layers of skin are still *moist*.
_____________________________________________________________

I would like to find an all-natural, non-Western replacement for Silvadene because although the active beneficial ingredient (Silver Sulfadiazine) is suspended in a hydrophilic (water washable) base, it's also accompanied by potentially undesirable ingredients such as petroleum and various alcohol derivatives.

There are alternatives if you're not able to obtain a prescription for Silvadene, or if you prefer to take a more wholistic approach and not use Silvadene because of the other questionable ingredients I previously mentioned. The desire for a wholistic path led me to the Tamanu Oil in the first place, and that's one of the reasons I recommend it as the first layer between the new skin and the Silvadene. Please reply and post any alternatives to Silvadene you may be aware of.

If you do substitute the Silvadene for something else, make sure it's with something that will provide a thick hydrating barrier between the new skin and Non-Adherent Dressing because Tamanu Oil alone is not enough. I believe the real key is to prevent the new skin from oxidizing and drying out at any time during the healing process. That's the most important factor in effective healing and avoiding scars.

burn bright,
love, laughter & light...

Thank you guys. Spinning in the fire conclave was massive for me on many levels. A bit worked its way into my journal if you wanna read, have fun http://tonyakay.com/blogger.html.

But what I want to know is this: did anyone get photos of the Pyronauts spinning this year? Post them, please, if so. I am obviously not one of the ones with documentation:-)

Wanna see through your eyes....

** Fire Spinning and Poi at Burning Man 05 **
---------------------------------------------

Here is my annual list of everything I could find in term of fire and poi spinning on the playa. Burning Man is HUGE and I’m sure I’m missing a lot of events.

I’m a big spinning geek (obviously), but NO, I’m not planning to attend all of these things. This is just an easy reference. I will definitely be at the Wed night jam at Hookahdome, though, since I used to camp with them.

If you have friends that love drumming and making music, please invite them as well.
Stop by at dusk; the performance will probably last no longer than an hour and a half; still plenty of time to perform at other gatherings on the playa. Ask for Kyro and/or Hans.

All fire performers are welcome, so bring your favorite fire tool or seven, and march on down to be a part of one of the biggest fire jams since, well, last year in front of the Hookahdome (which was huge. Trust me.)! If you'd like your own music played, bring it! Otherwise, our finest resident DJ's will spin some yummy beats for you to get down and dirty with.
“We were so happy with how things turned out in 2004, we've decided to step things up, because BIGGER IS BETTER! However, we felt there was too much talent that walked away with nothing, so we're going to give prizes to many categories, such as best technical spinning, originality, style, group coordination, and of course, sexiest. We're also working on providing a bigger and less slippery stage that will easily support stilts and larger groups. Any suggestions on how we can make this even better will be discussed on our camp messageboard. Please feel free to contribute, and thanks to all the amazing talent that performed at the 2004 event.”

Performer Fire Safety Guidelines

This was compiled by Tabasco and posted by Crimson Rose on Burning Man's BRC Extranet.
___________________________________________________________________________

Performer Fire Safety Guidelines, Tips and Tricks. Every Fire Watch and Fire Performer should know and utilize.

Type of Tools:

• Dynamic: Tools that may fly from performers grip and travel into a crowd. (Examples: Poi, Staff, hula hoop, meteor, fire breathing)

• Static: Usually smaller tools that are used in a slower dance or performance & if dropped will not go more than 4 feet from the performer. (Examples: Fingers, eating torches, palm torches, fans)

Fuels and Different responses:

• White Gas: Low flash point (probably the most used fuel)
o Used for Fire eating, most large tools, bodywork, Fire breathing.
o Dangerous if it spills, can light up quick and easy. It evaporates quickly, and has very little or no smoke.

• Lamp oil: High Flash Point (second most common fuel)
o Used for Fire Breathing, and most large tools.
o Leaves an oily residue on ground that can be slippery, however it is not likely to light., Smokey (usually after it has been smothered).

• Lighter Fluid: Low flash point
o Used for fire eating, and to help performers using lamp oil or kerosene light their tools faster. (Not a common fuel)

• Alcohol: Low flash point
o Used for fire eating, body work, breathing and colored flames.

• Kerosene: High flash point
o Smokey, smells bad, not for indoor use,
o Used with larger and smaller performance tools.

• Klean Heat: A kerosene supplement
o It acts like a blend of lamp oil and white gas, no smoke or residue, and harder to light. Have heard mixed response and have not played with it personally.

Fire Safeties tools of the trade:

• Wet towel (cotton or wool) or Duvetyn (unwashed, dry)
o These are your best friends
o The towel does not need to be dripping wet. It needs to be solidly damp.
o If fuel gets spilled on the duvetyn, through it away, and do not use again.
o Washing or wetting duvetyn rinses out the flame retardant chemical in it.

• Flash light
o It’s important to be able to see, when fire is not possible (ie Next to the fuel dump)

• Gloves (these are a bonus item, BBQ or welding gloves work great).
o Great for untangling chains wrapped around someone’s hands.

• Fire Extinguishers
o This should primarily be used for objects, not performer (ie stage is on fire). It is a last resort for performers. If possible use a CO2 (B) or water extinguisher (A) on a human before using a dry chem. (ABC).

• Voice
o Yell, announce yourself, and that there is a fire.

How to put tools out:

• Basic tools (ie poi, clubs)
o The preferred method is placing the towel on the ground, and having the performer place their torches on top. (Let the poi come to you)
o Sometimes performers will expect you to catch the fire and put it out, catch with the towel and smother. If you need to, take the tool to the ground to smother..
o Fully smother, if you stop too soon, the fire may flare back up.

• Tools attached to the body (ie fingers)
o Make sure you don’t push the fire toward the performer, sweep the fire away from their finger not towards.

• Multiple fire devices (ie staff or hoops)
o One flame at a time, preferably with a partner safety (then you can do multiple).
o Watch out for the end that is still on fire, have to be extra aware not to set other people or items on fire.

• Large fire items (ie Jump Ropes)
o Needs extra people, try and smother the whole thing at once, otherwise walk the towel smothering from one end to the other.
o You can also try gathering the whole thing into a bundle if the piece is not too big. A wet towel is better for this.

Fuel dump

• There is only one safe way to put out a fuel dump – extinguisher.
• Do NOT allow performers to place flaming tools near or in fuel dump.

Putting Performers out:

• Announce the fire
o Tell the performer where they are on fire
o Often a performer will brush a leg or arm and a small fire will be left, announce these and in most cases performers will put them out themselves.

• Announce yourself as you approach
o Beware, running up and putting a performer out while they are spinning big heavy balls of fire may not be in your best interest. Let them know you are there.

• Try and make eye Contact
o If they are panicking, rush. If they are not and should be, rush.
o If they seems to have it under control react but let them respond with you.

• Take care of yourself
o Having two people on fire is bad; if you are lit in the process of putting out a fire, put yourself out first.

• Tell the performer what to do/what you are doing
o Don’t let them hold a torch above your head while they are looking the other way.

• Keep your eyes open
o Watch
o If you are doing safety, and see safety putting some one out, if they don’t need help watch the rest of the performers. Do not stare at the accident.

• Use an extinguisher on a performer only if
o The fire is beyond the performer (ie stage is on fire)
o The fire is bigger than your towel can handle.
o You only have an extinguisher.

Things to Note and pay attention too:

• Clothing – In a perfect world everyone will wear natural fibers, however this is not a perfect world, and natural fibers are not as sexy as synthetics. Many performers will wear what they want, not what’s safe.
o Watch for frilly stuff, and fringe. This will catch on fire and stay on fire
o If it is synthetic protect yourself as well. It’s like hot sticky marshmallows when putting it out and will burn you very easily

• When watching several performers try and keep your eyes scanning the various performers. Watch the veterans do the cool and dangerous and the beginners who are backing them up.
• Braids are less likely to catch on fire than an Afro.

If the worst happens:

• Stay calm and do not cause panic, if you find your losing control, notify other safety and remove your self from the situation and allow others to deal with it.

• Injury:
o Make sure all fire is out
o Contact a Ranger who will contact emergency medical services.
o Try and keep the injured party comfortable.
o If a lot of water is available, (and if possible) place the wound in a bucket of water and keep the water moving over the burn. This will help stop the burn under the skin.
o DO Not use ice on a burn. This will actually cause more damage.

• Out of control fire
o On the playa try to put out with a fire extinguisher (preferably CO2)
o Try to keep it contained, keep performers and audience away
o If it is threatening to move into the audience or towards the man sacrifice your self to stop it or clear the area calmly, try to stay cool and collected.

Pyronaut Play/Party- Sat, July 30th!?!

Greetings Pyronauts,
I am honored and excited to be a part of this new manifestation of fire conclave. For many years, I felt tied down by the restrictions of having to join a 'city' conclave. I always believed that there could be a conclave that involved the most proficient, talented, and entertaining fire performers from around the world...and I am so happy that Scott has taken this on, thank you! As a member of this new conclave vision, I would like to extend a personal invitation to a great party this weekend on my new land, north of San Francisco.
It is my sweetheart Andrew's birthday, his dad's birthday, and our DOME-warming party...so come on up, bring your toys & drums, and let's connect before the burn. DJ Trevor (Moontribe), The New Lumerians, and other musicians will accompany us as we dance the night away under the stars. Potluck, BBQ, campout...hang with us until Sunday afternoon. It would be a blessing to have some of your presence. Below is the 'official' invite...it will be a blast, I hoop you can make it! And, I look forward to flaming with all of you at home on the Playa. Many blessings, kandice

Leo Birthday Bash for Jeff & Andrew

Saturday July 30th from 4 pm until late Sunday afternoon.

Enter the Lion’s Lair and come let your mane down.
Join us for fun and play while frolicking through
this wondrous enchanting celebration!

We will have live music, and performances by various artists, such as; improv theatre performances, dancing, singing, poetry reading, hula hooping, story telling, stilt walking, and various forms of fire dancing! (Bring your instruments, toys, etc…there is lots of room to play!)

Bring your goodies to BBQ, delicious food creations to share and favorite beverages to encourage our spirits to rise!

We are extending an invitation for those of you that wish to camp on the land and enjoy a late morning brunch.
Please bring your tent and necessary camping gear.

Contact Jeff at Jeff@TrinityHerb.com (707) 874-2800 or
Kandice at Holistichooping@yahoo.com (707) 874-9423

Please note: there is limited parking space on the land. Please carpool to reduce # of parked cars and check with us regarding additional guests.

The party is at: Joy Castle: 2211 Joy Road Bodega, CA 94922

From San Franscisco/ Oakland/Berkeley: Take the appropriate bridge to head North on the 101 Fwy.
Continue through Marin and Petaluma towards Santa Rosa, once you enter the Downtown area of Santa Rosa, take Hwy 12 West (towards Sebastopol) and follow the rest of the directions below.

From Santa Rosa/Sebastopol: Take Hwy12 west (Bodega Hwy) towards the town of Bodega, you will pass the Freestone/Occidental turnoff (on the right). Go another 3-4 miles, then you will pass the Old Watson Schoolhouse (on the left). Turn onto Joy Road, which is another two miles on the right. Your drive will take you past cow pastures into the forest as it winds up the first narrow hill, which then levels off and goes up a second, steeper hill. Just before the top of the second hill on the right is our address; 2211 Joy Rd. There will be balloons at the driveway entrance. If you go too far, Lauri Lane is 300 feet farther on the left. Once you have turned onto the dirt road, please follow the signs to 2211. The last 1/4 mile is paved and a bit steep, so be cautious. Enjoy your beautiful drive to Joy Castle!

thanks,

THIS SUNDAY! Burning Man Fire Conclave Open Spin Jam

Crimson is part of Burning Man LLC's senior staff, shin (head) of the SF Fire Conclave and in charge of all of the shins from all of the other troupes involved in the entire Fire Conclave.

The relevance to my tangent is EVERYONE IS WELCOME SO GET YO' BIG PHAT ASS DOWN THERE!!! ;^) ~Vatra~

Hello from the Phoenix Projekt, the Scrappy-do of L.A. conclaves.

We are having an absolute blast forming our little family of fire freaks and figuring out our show. And as stated before, we really want to see what you all are cooking up as well.

And even moreso, we want to meet you. We want to create bonds and ongoing friendship with fireslingers from all over the world.

So come on over! Thursday night, after we all become world record holders with Ted's Oceans of fire brilliance, we'll be opening up our camp, (a subset of Freedom Community) to any and all fire people, especially those with FC shows. We're having a night for fire spinners, hosted by fire spinners, because of fire spinners. You're our favorite people, because you're like us. We get it.

After all the FC's have run their shows, we'll kick on the beats and have an open jam spin. We want everyone to spin. From the one who picked it up that afternoon to the baddest asses around we hope you to share whatever it is that you're rocking at the moment. We have connections to Lorin Bassnectar, The Breakbeat Buddha, OOAh, and a few other of the dirtiest Dj's on the Playa. We're hopefully going to enlist a few of them, so the music will be as hot as we are.

And we'd also like to address something that interests us greatly. The division within the fire community. We are all very conscious people, who study an art that requires a lot of soul to excel within, but yet we are mired in the same muck of cliquishness, pettiness, and ego that pervades the "real" world.

Why is there not one comprehensive fire tribe that we all check into to see what's new and important?

We believe we can choose to transcend that. And come together to advance our artform to the next level. We can share skills, safety ideas, business platforms, and everything else that we could ever possibly need. We can become our own best resource.

We can and do deserve to make a living doing this. There are enough possible gigs out there if we create as whole, rather than opposing factions. Fire spinning feels a lot to me like both skateboarding and snowboarding did a long time ago. And look at them now. I was once one of a total of four Boarders on Mt. Hood. If you had told me that it would be an olympic sport and a giant business, Well, I would have thrown my green rubber fishing boot at you.

Anything is possible. As this discipline grows, there will be hurdles. Some punk wil burn down a trailer house and blame it on the Mutaytors. If we come to together and set ourselves up to succeed, we'll succeed. I don't know about you, but I like success. It appeals to me.

So we'd like to offer the invitation to let go of past differences, to come together under the shared love of the baddest bitch ever,
Fire.

Welcome home,

See ya thursday.

I assume that Vatra's seen it by now?!? Are we allowed to talk about it yet?

I haven't seen it yet, but I did see a funny video about it online today:
