I'm trying to steal your move where you do the BTB weave while turning around in a cirlce! 0:)

but... i'm having a hard time nailing the BTB weave going forwards... can't do the whole circle until I can get that move down first!

any helpful hints?

i've been smacking myself in the back of head with my socks for 2 wks and kind of getting nowhere with it...

the tribe thanks you!!!

It took me a couple of months to get my BTB weave going both ways but I finally nailed it so I'd just suggest practicing a bit each day and be patient with yourself. I got tired of hitting myself and getting my poi tangled all the time so I found some practice poi that were light-weight and had thicker cords, and that helped... perhaps you could try something lighter in your socks. Break it down and practice doing simple figure 8s behind your back, one hand at a time at first, wiggle your butt until you can clear your legs and head without smacking yourself, then put it all together as you did for the reverse BTB. It's incredibly satisfying once you get it... keep going, and eventually you will!

I'm still working at BTB weave turns, but so far can only go from reverse to forward so I can't keep turning yet. Someday I'll get it. Patience, Grasshopper. :-)

Drill drill drill and drill some more.

      Try this:
      Drop your left poi.
With your right hand do one rotation on that side and two rotations on the left.
Practice this drill and when you bring your hand back to the "home" side lift your elbow as you follow through with the rotation.
Repeat the drill with your left side. One beat on the left and two beats crossed over to the right.

Now try and do a cross over on one side of your body. then try the other side. Next combine the two. I had the most difficulty getting my left hand to cross over to my right side and under my right arm. But I eventually got it and oh what a feelzing! Good luck!

Actually that's how I learned the BTB reverse weave so it makes laods of sense to try drill in the opposite direction!

(the simple solutions are the ones we always miss, huh?)

        Thanks!

Sorry for the lag on responding. The new tribe layout doesn't have this tribe on my home page so I didn't notice the new posts.

In addition to the drill previously mentioned, try holding *one* Poi behind your back with both hands. Work up some momentum by swinging the Poi back and forth on one side and then go into a forward figure-8 spin behind your back. Make sure you hold the Poi equally with both hands in order to achieve a balanced and symmetrical form while you swing the Poi from your left side to your right.

You can then try this same drill with a Poi in each hand butting your hands up to each other behind your back. It's a lot harder with 2 Poi, which will eventually provide you with the muscle memory needed to move on to the technical (weave) part of the move.

These are all of the same drills I showed you for the BTB reverse weave, but in forward. When you're ready to start turning, use weave turns in front of you as a reference for BTB weave turns. They essentially require the same mechanics whether the turns are in front of you or behind you.

Even in 3 beat BTB weave turns, it still 'feels' like 5 beats. Don't be suprised if you wrist has to bend a LOT in order to not tangle :)

While we're at it - anyone have tips for a BTB wheelplane butterfly weave? A friend of mine sorta did it by accident and we've been working on it ever since. Carrying the poi behind our back without hitting an ankle/butt is giving us issues.

I'd apply the great advice that Vatra gave about the BTB weave, but you can't really use that method if the poi are spinning in different directions, unless I'm missing something, please share!

Alternatively - EVERYONE READING THIS, GO TO FIREDRUMS. By the end of that weekend, every single participant will be a much, much better spinner.

btb wheelplane butterfly weave? umm...if that's what I think it is (doing a butterfly at your side but with one hand stretching behind your back?), the most challenging part is keeping the plane straight with the hand that's stretching btb. just practice keeping it going, then toss the other hand in there. streeeeeetch!

From there you can move on to btb waist wraps and hitting yourself in the FACE! YAY!

Memory, HA! I have been working on waist wraps the last few weeks and have hit myself in the face ALOT of times. OUCH. One thing that it has taught me that I should have learned a long ass time ago is to SLOW down. I have no idea why, but when I try to muscle through moves that I am trying to figure out I tend to speed up, which if you think about it makes no FRICKIN sense. First of all, you have much less time to actually accomplish the move, second of all when spinning fast and then hitting my face it hurts ALOT more. Why I am only learning that lesson now, I do not know. I guess I am kind of a slow learner.

On a seperate, but related note. I finally got the forward btb weave. I've been doing the reverse since Vatra taught it to me almost a year ago. Now I am working on the turn.

"From there you can move on to btb waist wraps and hitting yourself in the FACE! YAY!"

i've been getting those down in the past few weeks, and i'm now able to do a full BTB waistwrap, as well as weave turns BTB... but both the wheelplane and wallplane BTB butterfly weaves aren't working out, the hand that crosses behind the back always manages to hit the other arm. I think part of the problem is that I don't know if the hand that goes behind the back should be between my other arm and your body, or outside of my arm (hope that makes sense).

My #1 advice when having difficulty learning ANY move is to break it all down and start over with the most simple mechanics. First *one hand at a time* and then *both hands joined together* before you move to *each hand doing the separate movements simultaneously*.

True, not while they're spinning in opposite directions, but you can do the movement one arm at a time. After that feels smooth, you can do the same movement with both hands joined together BTB. When this feels smooth in each direction and on each side, then both arms will have the muscle memory in each direction & side, especially because of the added difficulty of practicing with both hands joined BTB. When you master ALL of these separate components then the muscle memory will be engrained, providing you with the necessary plane control to avoid your butt / ankles and the ability to concentrate on the technical (butterfly) mechanics of the move.
